About Tom Ashton

Tom Ashton is a published author and tenacious Roanoke lawyer who puts his clients' interests first.

As an attorney, he has represented many different types of clients, from large multi-billion dollar businesses to pro bono individuals. He also has extensive experience in many different areas of the law, including: family law  (divorce, support and custody), general civil litigation, traffic law and misdemeanor criminal defense, business formation and corporate governance, plaintiff's personal injury, GAO protests and federal procurement law, bankruptcy (Chapters 7, 11 and 13), construction litigation, civil rights and s. 1983 cases, protective orders, and alternative dispute resolution. Tom has won jury and bench trials in Virginia, and has been victorious at the appellate level in both state and federal courts.

This broad experience and track record of successful representation allows him to bring a different perspective to bear in his practice, considering the "whole client" and not reducing the client to a specific issue or set of issues. He seeks to give clients legal advice in the context of their lives, along with a range of options and realistic assessments of the costs and benefits of each.

Tom has practiced in many different courts throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, and is admitted to practice in the following:

On a personal note, Tom is a Roanoke native. After graduating from North Cross School in 1998, Tom graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 2002 and the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond in 2005. After graduating from law school, Tom worked in Richmond, VA, then Winchester, VA and Poquoson, VA. In 2018, he returned to the Roanoke area after a 3-year sojourn in Idaho, where he received accolades for his work on a special project for the United States Air Force's 366th Fighter Wing in conjunction with the Republic of Singapore, securing contractor services to train foreign fighter jet pilots and maintenance crew for the F-15SG fighter jet variant.

He was a varsity soccer player at Hampden-Sydney College (Go Tigers!), and is an avid fan of the game to this day. In his spare time, he loves spending time with his sons, enjoying the outdoors in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley, and exploring his beloved Roanoke and the surrounding areas.
